Japan withdraws Hino’s engine certification due to false emissions data

The move, which will also apply to Toyota Motor Corp and Isuzu Motors Ltd vehicles using one of the Hino engines, will be formally announced by the ministry on March 25, it said in a statement. Hino admitted this month to falsifying emissions and fuel economy data for three of the engines. In a fourth engine, performance was later discovered to be less than specified, although it had found no evidence of wrongdoing to date. It has set up a special commission of inquiry composed of outside experts to investigate the matter. According to Hino, about 115,000 vehicles are equipped with the engines. Hino is the latest in a string of Japanese automakers involved in incorrect emissions testing. In 2018, the government said Mazda Motor (OTC:) Corp, Suzuki Motor Corp and Yamaha Motor Co Ltd incorrectly tested vehicles for fuel economy and emissions. Subaru (OTC:) Corp and Nissan (OTC:) Motor Co Ltd were under scrutiny the year before for the same reason. The accuracy of automakers’ emissions data was called into question in 2015 when Germany’s Volkswagen AG (OTC:) admitted to installing secret software in hundreds of thousands of American diesel cars to falsify exhaust emission tests, and that as many as 11 million vehicles installed similar software worldwide.
