There is one range of physical, philosophical, environmental and logistical reasons why it is better to hop on a bike than it is to drive a car. Gas prices are rising. The earth is burning. And yet it is somehow easy to ignore all this when you are late for work and have not yet hit pants on your screaming toddler.
If you are trying to reconcile the carefree cycling days of your past with your current life as a family driver, I can highly recommend getting an electric cargo bike. Mine has transformed my life and transformed my boring, daily running into a multitasking combination of joyride and training. We have been reviewing ebikes for a couple of years here at WIRED. I regularly have kids, groceries and bags with who knows what around town on some of the best (and worst) electric cargo bikes. These are our favorites.
When you have a bike, check out our guide to family biking with kids. Do you need a smaller vehicle? See our overview of the best electric bikes and the best bike accessories.
Updated June 2022: We made an older choice, added a slide with honorable mentions, and added Tern Quick Haul.
