Health and Smartwatch deals

Withings ScanWatch

Photo: Withings

WIRED contributor Simon Hill gave it an 8/10, WIRED recommends because it offers health tracking features such as heart rate monitoring, ECG and blood oxygen levels, all in a classic-looking design that doesn’t scream “smartwatch”.

Jorn does not have the most advanced fitness and health tracking features, but review editor Julian Chokkattu likes it for its intuitive user interface and ease of use to see weather information, heart rate and gait tracking. Women’s size also available at the same price.

Even at a closer look, it would be hard to see Retro Pilot as a smartwatch, and yet it offers music playback controls, tracks step count, monitors sleep performance and can even be configured to operate dad’s phone camera when paired with his smartphone via the app.

We have mixed feelings about DNA test kits, but if you and your dad understand and accept the potential implications of looking into his genetic history, Ancestry’s kits are among the most detailed on the market.

Homelabs Sunrise

The Homelabs watch is my favorite sunrise alarm, not because it’s the most fully equipped watch on the market, but because it does all the basics just as well (or better) than sunrise alarm clocks that cost several times the price. If dad is having a hard time falling asleep or waking up in the morning, a sunrise clock may be just what he needs to ease his way in or out of bed.

Triple, flexible rotating heads ensure a close shave by following the contours of dad’s face. Since it is waterproof, he can use it in the shower, which some people like to do when shaving. It also comes with an accessory to trim the edges of his beard if he is not all-in on the completely clean-shaven look.

Sound and music offerings

Sonos Roam

Photo: Sonos

For a small speaker, Roam is capable of a large sound that is not distorted at high volumes. This is partly why it got a strong 9/10, recommends WIRED in our review. It offers not only Bluetooth connectivity but also Wi-Fi. Part of the speaker’s appeal is that it’s also the cheapest way to join the ecosystem of Sonos devices. This agreement is also available at Goal and Best buy.

The Fenders Player series is my favorite recommendation for a dad who wants a high quality electric guitar that is a step up from the starting axes but who does not want to break the bank. This model offers all the distinctive Strat bell and brightness with three single-coil pickups and a maple neck and fingerboard.

Beats Fit Pro (9/10, WIRED recommends) is one of our favorite workout headphones. Associate Reviewer Parker Hall calls them the best everyday headphones for iPhone users, thanks to their comfortable and secure in-ear fit and excellent sound quality.

It’s not the biggest discount, but the Apple AirPods Max rarely goes on sale, and Hall says they’re the best wireless headphones he’s ever used. Their excellent sound and build quality gave them an 8/10, WIRED recommends in his review. The price varies by color.

Dealing with monitors

Facebook Go portal

The Go Portal (8/10, WIRED recommends) has a 10-inch screen and can act as a Bluetooth speaker, but its eye-catching feature is that the smartphone automatically zooms and pans during video calls to make it look like is a personal camera crew at work. Meta is interrupt it for consumer use, but will keep it as a business entity, so hopefully it will continue to get software updates.

Send Dad a digital photo frame to remind him of all the good times you had together. The software will automatically select similar images and display them side by side on the 1920×1200 resolution, 10.1-inch screen. You can send Dad the frame and then surprise him by remotely uploading a bunch of pictures of the two of you together through the Aura app.

Totallee is one of our favorite iPhone covers because it gives a shock in scratch and fall protection over a phone without a case, but with a thickness of only 0.02 inches, it is not thick enough to make dad feel that he carries a brick. This case is compatible with MagSafe wireless charging. There is also a case for the newer iPhone 13 if your dad recently upgraded his phone.

MasterClass offers more than 150 online classes in 11 categories, taught by famous big names. He could take writing lessons from Joyce Carol Oates or science lessons from Bill Nye without ever having to leave the couch. The duo plans include access to one account on two devices at the same time and let the user download classes for offline viewing.

The starter kit with three lenses costs only $ 39 more than the kit with two lenses, so you might as well skip for the extra lens. It includes an iPhone cover that allows Dad to mount all three lenses that come with the kit. You can choose your combination of lenses, from fisheye to telephoto to macro lenses.

If Pops is notorious for cracking down on thermostat changes, this will be right up your alley. Nest’s intelligent thermostat will act as his sidekick and save money and energy by adjusting the temperature of a home without adversely affecting the people living there. Brownie points can be awarded if you give him tools while you install them together. This price is $ 5 higher than it was during Black Friday sales last year.

This basic e-reader took second place in our guide to the best Kindles. It lacks the page shift buttons and modern charging options from the more expensive Paperwhite, but the 2019 Kindle is still a clever little gadget. It has backlighting and the 6-inch screen is meant to look and feel more like paper than a screen. The battery lasts for weeks on end, and Dad will be able to fill it with hundreds if not thousands of books. Stop lugging bags of non-fiction novels to the beach!

Home and kitchen deals

Casper weighted rug

If Dad wants to give the takeout boot and get started cooking, this 17-piece set will form a solid foundation for a kitchen charge. From frying pans and pots of various sizes to a three-piece nylon cooking tool set, he has everything he needs to become the household’s newest chef. Just remember to tell him that he should use the included frying basket sparingly.

Whether he’s just out for tea or likes sweet snacks, this gift set keeps Dad going for a while. It has 20 tea bags, jam, lemon curd, sconemix, cakes and more. As a nice bonus that most other Harry & David gift baskets do not include, Dad will also receive a couple of kitchen utensils in this set: a ceramic teapot and a bamboo honey dipper.

There is nothing like a little gravity-assisted pressure to help Dad nod away. If he needs a little help falling asleep at night, or if he just likes to cuddle up on the couch, give him a weighted blanket in 10-, 15- or 20-pound weights, all available for $ 99 .

Electric kettles heat up faster than electric kettles on the stove, so if dad is the kind of person who wakes up and goes straight for his coffee or tea, turn up the morning with this digital kettle. The gooseneck design allows for more control while pouring up if your pop is for making pour-over coffee.

Coffee is good hot, coffee is good ice cold, but coffee is not well lukewarm. Make sure Dad never shyes away from a tear of deterrent, room-temperature java again with this rechargeable mug that lets him keep his coffee (or tea) warm for up to 80 minutes. The temperature can be adjusted from 120 to 145 degrees – the perfect temperature for good, steaming coffee.

Because when dad just needs a stove with push buttons that he can set and forget while he goes his day, Foodi offers a laundry list of options. This Instant Pot competitor does pressure cooking, air frying, steaming, slow cooking, yogurt making, frying, sautéing, frying, frying, sous vide and more.

Senior product reviewer Scott Gilbertson likes the Gevi because it meets two important criteria for an espresso machine: It is largely made of metal and it can reach a pressure of 15 bar. And it does all this at a budget price when many espresso machines cost a nice penny.

This is the very best coffee grinder for most people. It’s usually quite affordable, but this discount makes it even more affordable. There are several different settings for different brewing needs, and it also does not take up too much space on the counter.

Outdoor offer

Weber Spirit II E-210

Photo: Weber

Even easy-to-adjust cooking temperatures and burners make Spirit II our favorite gas grill. It is a bit small for large families and lacks a side burner, but the porcelain-coated cast iron grill grills have it.

Ray-Ban’s classic Wayfarer gets all the attention, but the New Wayfarer is perfect for fathers who might feel like the original is too big. The New Wayfarer has slightly smaller lenses and is less slanted, so Pop can have all the style in a slimmer package.

Bicycle helmets do not have to detract from dad’s style when he’s on two wheels. Portland, Oregon-based Nutcase makes some of the WIRED team’s favorite helmets thanks to a range of great designs and Multi-directional Impact Protection (MIPS) that provide extra protection against rotational influences.

Propella 7S

Photo: Propella

Parker Hall gave the 7S an 8/10, WIRED recommends because of its quality components and low cost (for an electric bike). It is light at 37 pounds, has seven mechanical gears, reaches a top speed of 18 miles per hour and has a range of 20 to 40 miles per charge. Through June 20, Propella will also provide free shipping.

It can hardly be called cheap, but even the more affordable 52-watt version can reach a top speed of 38 miles per hour and go up to 40 miles on a single charge. Because when a bike just takes up too much space in storage, the foldable Phantom V2 can easily be taken into dad’s office or home.
